The Arcachon bay is a unique place in Europe. It is the perfect illustration of the forces of nature, of the power of the currents which cross it, and of the three hundred million cubic meters of water which circulate through the passage which connects the ocean to the basin, which empties and fills up at the tides rhythm. At low tide, navigating the Banc d’Arguin channels, with its translucent waters and luminous sand, in a unique setting that has nothing to envy to the landscapes of Polynesia, is a unique experience.
Perched on their stilts in the center of the Arcachon basin, at the end of the Ile aux Oiseaux, the famous Tchanquées huts, these former oyster huts now under the protection of the coastal conservatory, have become the emblem of this basin. Nearby, at the bottom of the lagoon, the Pyla dune offers its postcard landscape. Five hundred meters wide, nearly 3 km long, currently 109 m high, it is the tallest coastline dune in Europe. The ascent of this natural monument, which is part of the Great Sites of France, is magical. Offering on each side magnificent landscapes of diverses colours this band of sand naturally separates the world of liquid and the world of solid.
The basin juxtaposes very different atmospheres. It’s part of its magic. Barely further on, we reach the Cap-Ferret peninsula, a coastal strip of pine and dunes, which for a very long time was only a corner for fishermen. Today, its 25 km of unspoiled nature separating the ocean and the basin, have become one of the most popular places on the Atlantic coast. Ideal land for surfers, Cap-Ferret and its chic and relaxed atmosphere, its creative youth, offers a unique art of living that attracts celebrities, who have built their second homes there, and happy few.

Canoe down the Leyre river to its delta, in the heart of wild and peaceful nature. Made up of islets set on a combination of fresh and salt water, this “green gold”, of wet meadows, salt meadows and dyked areas, offers an idyllic territory for the nesting and migration of birds and is home to an exceptional flora.
TASTE THE OYSTERS AT AN OYSTER FARM
With more than 300 oyster farms, here the oyster is queen. In a picturesque oyster village, set off in a traditional pinnace before sitting down in an idyllic setting and tasting oysters accompanied by a glass of white wine, bread, lemon, butter and pâté, with your feet in the water. The oyster farmer can also show you the technique to easily open them.
