ATTEND THE FESTIVAL D'AVIGNON
The Festival d’Avignon is one of the world’s most important contemporary performing arts event. Every year in July, Avignon is transformed into a theater city for international avant-garde creation, its architectural heritage welcoming various majestic performance venues and tens of thousands of theater-lovers.
SING ON THE AVIGNON BRIDGE
The Pont d’Avignon, built over the Rhône, originally had 22 arches. If only 4 arches subsist, with the Chapel de Saint-Bénezet standing on the second piling, this building, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, remains definitively associated with the French nursery rhyme “Sur le Pont d’Avignon”.
VISIT THE BIGGEST GOTHIC PALACE IN THE WORLD
Transformed into the papal residence in the early 14th century until the early 1400’s when the papacy returned to Rome, the Palace of the Popes stands in powerful testimony to the presence of 9 popes who lived in and reigned from Avignon in the 1300’s. A guided visit will take you through its 25 rooms including the private apartments where the pope lived, the Papal Chamber and the Saint John chapels, painted with frescoes by the Italian artist Matteo Giovannetti.
