Châteauneuf-du-Pape, testify to the influence of the Popes
Châteauneuf du Pape means “The New Castle of the Pope”. These prestigious vines are the legacy of the Popes’ desire to create a new Rome in Avignon.
The first Pope to settle in Avignon was Pope Clement V, a great wine lover, but it was John XXII who improved wine-growing practices in the region. He erected a castle and planted vines in 1317. At the time, the wines were known as “Vin du Pape”.
